As New Zealand industry becomes increasingly reliant on automation and advanced control systems, the need for skilled Industrial Measurement and Control (IMC) Technicians continues to grow.
To help meet this demand, EarnLearn has launched a new Industrial Measurement and Control (IMC) programme designed to better reflect the technologies, workplace practices and skills required across modern industrial operations.
The New Zealand Certificate in Industrial Measurement and Control (Practice) (Level 4) provides workplace-based training for people working with systems used to measure, monitor and control industrial processes. The programme supports industries where reliable processes control is critical, including manufacturing, food processing, utilities and infrastructure.
The launch follows a review of the existing qualification and the subsequent development of a new suite of skill standards by Waihanga Ara Rau Workforce Development Council, in collaboration with industry.
Designed to better reflect modern IMC practice, the new programme responds to industry demand for training that is practical, relevant and adaptable to rapidly evolving technologies and workplace practices
EarnLearn Delivery Manager Vittoria Colonna says the new programme has been built around these industry-informed skill standards, with a strong focus on practical application.
“This programme has been developed alongside industry to ensure training remains relevant to modern workplaces. Learners can demonstrate competence using the equipment, technologies and systems they work with every day.”
A key feature of the new programme, say’s Colonna, is its emphasis on learning and assessment in the workplace.
“Eleven of the programme’s assessments are completed on the job, allowing trainees to provide evidence of competence through real tasks rather than simulated scenarios.”
The programme typically takes around 14 months to complete, with assessment evidence gathered from trainees’ day-to-day work, verified by a qualified workplace verifier and supported by EarnLearn assessors.
Colonna confirms that the launch will not affect employers or trainees already enrolled in EarnLearn’s existing IMC programme.
“Existing trainees will continue with their current programme through to its expiry in 2027, while new and returning trainees enrolling from 1 September 2026 will enter the new programme.”
EarnLearn is currently the only training provider offering the New Zealand Certificate in Industrial Measurement and Control (Practice) (Level 4).
