What is Industrial Measurement & Control?

Industrial Measurement & Control is the discipline responsible for measuring, monitoring, and controlling industrial processes. It combines instrumentation, automation, electrical systems, and process control to ensure equipment and production systems operate accurately and efficiently.

Control

Control systems use measurement data to automatically regulate and optimise industrial processes. This may involve PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), SCADA systems, controllers, actuators, valves, and other control equipment that help maintain safe and efficient operating conditions.

Industrial Measurement & Control supports:

About the Qualification

The New Zealand Certificate in Industrial Measurement and Control (Practice) (Level 4) provides the process industries with individuals who can apply essential Industrial Measurement and Control (IMC) knowledge and practical skills to operate safely and competently in industrial environments. It is suitable for those who wish to advance from practical electrical or mechanical engineering roles into an industrial instrumentation technician role.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to operate as instrumentation technicians under limited supervision, demonstrating effective self-management of their learning and performance.

 

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Install and commission industrial instrumentation to meet industry requirements.
  • Diagnose and correct faults in industrial measurement and control systems to meet industry requirements.
  • Service industrial measurement and control equipment and systems to meet industry requirements.
  • Identify and manage risks to people, plant, equipment, product quality and the environment in an industrial context.

How the Training Works

This programme is workplace-based and designed to be completed while employed in industry.

Learners complete a series of practical on-job assessments, demonstrating competence in real-world tasks under the guidance of experienced workplace personnel and EarnLearn support staff.

Throughout the programme, learners receive support from an EarnLearn Account Manager who will:

  • Assist with enrolment and induction.
  • Monitor progress throughout training.
  • Provide ongoing guidance and support.
  • Connect learners with additional resources where required.

The qualification consists of 11 compulsory on-job assessments covering:

  • Installing and commissioning measuring instruments
  • Pneumatic and electropneumatic equipment
  • Fault diagnosis and correction
  • PID controllers and control loops
  • Pressure measurement systems
  • Level measurement systems
  • Temperature measurement systems
  • Flow measurement systems
  • Actuators and positioners
  • Analytical measurement equipment
  • Final controlling elements

 

All assessments are completed in the workplace and verified by a registered Workplace Verifier before being assessed by EarnLearn.

Practical Training

From tasks to assessment

You are considered practically competent when you can independently and repeatedly demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to complete the practical task in your training.

Learn by doing

Your apprenticeship is built around practical experience in the workplace. Your supervisor will demonstrate how tasks are completed, explain why they’re done that way, and ensure you follow safe working practices.

As you gain experience, keep a record of the practical tasks you complete. This will help you track your progress and collect the evidence you’ll need for your on-job assessments.

Workplace Verifier

Your Workplace Verifier confirms you’ve successfully completed the required practical tasks and signs your verification form before submission.

Once you’ve submitted your assessment, an EarnLearn Assessor reviews your evidence and determines whether you’ve met the required standard.

Every on-job assessment includes a checklist outlining the practical tasks and evidence you’ll need to provide. Once you’ve completed the required work, it’s your responsibility to:
