While that means it’s important that apprentices are supported and capable of working across a range of jobs, it also gives them opportunity, John says. 

“We want all our team to be all-round, good electricians, rather than just being pigeonholed into one part of the industry. So we try to give them exposure to good work across the board.” 

The variety of work also means apprentices can see how different parts of the trade fit together, rather than developing their skills in isolation. As they progress through their training, they can build on what they have learned and gain a better understanding of the different opportunities available within the industry.  

But the advantages aren’t all one-way in favour of the apprentices, he adds. 

“Apprentices can also bring new ideas into the business. Everyone has different ways of thinking and working, and we do encourage them to offer up their ideas if they come up with some new or a different way of doing something. It also adds a bit of youth to the team!” 

The whole XP Electrical team gets behind each apprentice, taking them under a wing to show them the ropes to help build confidence, and make sure they’re trained properly, with apprentices able to ask questions, learn from mistakes and gradually take on more responsibility as their skills develop.
