Assessors are responsible for determining whether a learner has met the requirements of each unit standard. This involves making professional judgements based on verified workplace evidence and EarnLearn-approved assessment resources.
As an assessor, you will:
Review learner evidence across written assessments, workplace tasks, and verifier reports
Apply consistent judgement aligned to national standards and assessor scope
Provide clear, constructive feedback to support learner progress
Ensure assessment decisions are fair, transparent, and well documented
All assessment activity is supported by EarnLearn systems and quality assurance processes.
Assessors support learners throughout the training and assessment process by reviewing evidence and confirming competence.
Reviewing evidence of competence
Assessors review evidence submitted by the learner and confirmed by the verifier. Evidence typically includes:
Written or online assessment responses
Workplace documents and records
Verification from supervisors or managers
Observed or reported workplace tasks
The assessor uses this evidence to determine whether the learner meets the standard consistently and safely.
To remain registered with EarnLearn, assessors are expected to:
Remain active by completing assessments on a regular basis
Participate in assessor forums, events, or professional development
Meet moderation and quality assurance requirements
Assess only within their approved assessor scope
Maintain clear documentation and confidentiality
Further detail on assessor responsibilities is available in the Assessor Guidelines.
To register as an EarnLearn assessor your workplace or organisation must have learners who have Training Agreements with EarnLearn as well as programmes that support the workplace assessment model. If unsure please check with our Quality Assurance team.
Assessors must hold unit standard 4098 (Use standards to assess learner performance) or an approved equivalent.
All assessors are registered with EarnLearn and assess within an approved assessment scope.
Assessors can be workplace-based or independent contract assessors.
Assessment decisions must be supported by multiple sources of evidence, not a single task or test.
Assessors are required to participate in moderation and ongoing professional development.
To apply to become an assessor, please download and complete the Assessor Application form.
Applications should be forwarded to qa@earnlearn.ac.nz.
EarnLearn assessors play a vital role in confirming learner competence through real workplace evidence. Registration ensures you are approved to assess against national standards, supported by clear systems, moderation, and quality assurance.
To register as an EarnLearn assessor, your workplace or organisation must employ learners with active EarnLearn Training Agreements and be able to support a workplace-based assessment model. This includes providing appropriate opportunities for learners to demonstrate competence through real work. If you are unsure whether your organisation meets these requirements, the Quality Assurance team can help clarify your eligibility.
Once eligibility is confirmed, you can apply by completing the Assessor Application Form and emailing it to qa@earnlearn.ac.nz. Applications are reviewed by the Quality Assurance team, who assess qualifications, industry experience, and proposed assessor scope to ensure alignment with national requirements.
After your application is approved, EarnLearn will arrange a short assessor induction and provide login details to access approved learning and assessment resources. You will be supported to understand assessment expectations, documentation requirements, and moderation processes so you can begin assessing with confidence.

Clear answers to common questions about assessing with EarnLearn.
As an EarnLearn assessor, you are responsible for determining whether a learner has met the requirements of a unit standard by reviewing workplace evidence and applying professional judgement. Your role is to confirm competence based on real work, provide clear feedback, and ensure assessment decisions are fair, consistent, and well documented in line with national standards.
Assessors use a collection-of-evidence approach, which may include written assessment responses, workplace documentation, verifier confirmation, photos or videos of completed work, and professional conversations. Evidence must be sufficient, authentic, current, and relevant to the standard being assessed.
Moderation is a quality assurance process that ensures assessment decisions are consistent and aligned with national standards. Assessors may be asked to submit samples of assessed work, participate in internal or external moderation, and respond to feedback from the Quality Assurance team. Participation in moderation is a requirement of remaining registered as an EarnLearn assessor.
Assessors are supported by EarnLearn’s Quality Assurance team and approved assessment resources. If you need clarification on evidence, scope, or assessment decisions, you can contact QA for guidance to ensure your judgement is well supported and compliant.
To remain registered, assessors must stay active by completing assessments, participate in moderation and professional development activities, assess only within their approved scope, and meet all documentation and quality assurance requirements.
